Every morning mom and I are out the door between 7:00 – 8:00 am to go for our walk. It gets sooooo hot outside after 8:30 that you cannot walk more then 1km before throwing in the towel. I really don’t know how you can live in Phoenix during the summer??!!! It hit 38 degrees yesterday afternoon – way too hot to do anything really. It was even too hot for the pool – and I’m even a sun loving bunny!! Remind me to book a month earlier next time I come out.
After our walk mom and I made breakfast and sat on the covered patio. Mom went inside to clean up and I was sitting outside sipping on my second cup of coffee when I heard a new sound. It was muffled and I couldn’t tell what it was and if it was a bird…??!! (There are lots of bird here and all of them are so different). It was low pitched sound that was cooing every 2 seconds for about 20 seconds straight. I could not figure this sound out??!!
Mom came back out and 2 minutes later it started up again – only this time it was louder was VERY CLEARLY somebody yelling for help. I jumped out of my chair and said “mom somebody is yelling for help”. She still didn’t quite hear it but I ran out the front door searching where this yelling was coming from. It was muffled so I knew it was coming from inside a house…. but which house?! Where do we even start??!! OMG!?
I ran to the corner of the block and listened again. I must have stood there for what felt like 5 minutes listening for the cry again and it started up. It sounded like it was coming from the other side of the block! I ran to the other side of the block and stood there for another 5 mins listening…. I couldn’t hear anything!!! I was growing more and more concerned that somebody was going to stop yelling soon if I didn’t find them. For all I know they could have fallen and were bleeding to death!!!!!
Mom and I ran to the other side of the block again and we heard the cries but they stopped as we rounded the corner. We could not figure out where this yelling was coming from!!!??? Com’on..!!!!! We sat there for another 3 minutes and decided I’m going to start knocking on doors. I’d rather knock on some wrong doors and disturb people then let this go on any longer. I walked up to the first house on the block and it looked deserted. Dead palm fronds everywhere and all the shrubbery looked like it hadn’t been watered in years. I rang the doorbell and heard a HELP loud and clear! This was the house. OMG we found her!!! It was time to call 9-1-1.
This house was on lock-down like Fort Knox. All the windows were locked, front door dead-bolted… there was no way we were getting into that house. We started getting some attention now and one of the neighbors chimed in and tried helping us find a hidden key, removing screens from the windows seeing if we could get in some way or another. It was clear non-one was getting in unless we broke a window.
Finally the police and firetruck arrived. It took them over 10 mins to break into this ladies house. They finally got in and I FINALLY felt relieved. She was conscious and doing well, talking and in good spirits. We never did find out what exactly happened to her, but we think she may of had a stroke. As the firetruck and ambulance drove off mom and I headed back to the house. I was exhausted, both from the heat and excitement. That and I’m not sure I’ve moved that quickly since before getting pregnant…
Phew! What a day and its only 10:30 am…
