When I first started in the online world in 2016, my life was already bursting at the seams. I was working corporate downtown during the day and running my salon in the evenings and on weekends. My schedule was no joke—I was clocking anywhere from 50 to 70 hours a week. When I say I didn’t have time, I mean it. But somehow, I made it work.
I got creative and carved out time in the busy nooks and crannies of my day. I worked during my commute to work, squeezed in tasks during lunch breaks, and sacrificed some Netflix time—not entirely, let’s be real, it was playing in the background. But I shifted my focus to building something sustainable and long-term.
Fast forward two years, and life threw me a curveball. I had my twins and became a single mom. Life felt like it was falling apart. I remember being terrified, wondering how I was going to sustain my businesses while navigating motherhood and the challenges of being newly single. But I refused to give up.
I showed up every day, no matter what. Some days I was in a messy bun and PJs, and others I managed to pull myself together for the first time in weeks. And you know what? My audience didn’t care about how I looked. They cared that I was there, consistently. Because when it comes to building a better future for yourself and your family, it’s not about perfection—it’s about the drive inside you to make it happen.
Here’s how you can do it too:
Step 1: Find Your Idea
Think about what lights you up or what you’re good at. For me, it was sharing my experiences and finding ways to help others. Ask yourself:
- What do I enjoy doing?
- What do people come to me for advice about?
Turn that into a product, service, or content idea.
Step 2: Make Time Work for You
Your schedule is hectic—I get it. But there’s always time if you look for it:
- Commutes: Use train rides or carpool time to brainstorm ideas or draft social media posts.
- Lunch breaks: Take 20 minutes to research or plan your next step.
- Evenings: Set aside 30 minutes after the kids go to bed to focus on your business.
It’s not about having hours of free time; it’s about using the time you have wisely.
Step 3: Start Small
You don’t need to have it all figured out right away. Start with one thing:
- Create a simple website or social media account.
- Offer your first product or service to friends or family.
- Post one piece of content each week to build your presence.
Small steps lead to big results over time.
Step 4: Use the Right Tools
I leaned heavily on tools that made my life easier:
- Canva for quick and easy graphics.
- Hootsuite to schedule social media posts ahead of time.
- Free platforms like WordPress for blogging or Shopify for selling.
Automation is your best friend when you’re juggling a million things.
Step 5: Stay Consistent and Be Kind to Yourself
There will be days when it feels impossible. Trust me, I’ve been there. But consistency is key. Even if you only have 20 minutes, use them. Celebrate small wins, like your first sale or follower.
Building a business as a busy mom isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. You don’t have to do it perfectly—just start. Carve out a little time, get creative with your schedule, and take it step by step.
